Why We Relay - Candle Bag Team

01 May 2026

People often see the candle bags glowing around the track…but what they don’t always see is everything that happens before, and after, that moment.

More than a moment - months in the making.

Managing the candle bags is no small task. Each year, we prepare for over 5,000 bags, and every single one matters.

It all starts with the bags themselves, which arrive to us completely blank. The first job is simple but important,  making sure each one is labelled and numbered. From there, it becomes about organisation and care. The bags are grouped and managed in batches, always kept in strict numerical order as they are sold.

Every detail matters. Every number matters.

We begin selling candle bags from our first Team Captains Night in March, right through to Relay weekend in July. Each bag sold not only becomes part of the Candle of Hope ceremony, but also plays a vital role in our fundraising, supporting the services and supports that mean so much to so many. As the decorated bags start coming back to us, the real coordination begins,  ensuring every single one is returned, checked, and placed back into sequence.

We do this for a reason. On the day of Relay, people come looking for
their bag. From our Number One bag,  which we reserve each year for someone very special we may have recently lost,  right through to the thousands that follow, every bag has a place, and every story deserves to be found.

Behind every light, there’s a name.

Getting the bags to the pitch is another milestone. Then comes the careful planning to line the track, creating a space where people can walk, pause, reflect, and take in the beautiful personal messages and dedications.

At this point, it really does feel like a military operation,  but after more than 10 years, our incredible crew has it down to a fine art.

Each bag is prepared with our made-to-measure tealight block, placed carefully and precisely in its spot. Then, as dusk approaches, everything starts to come together.

The community gathers. The track begins to glow. Together, we light the night. One flame at a time. It’s a moment that stops you in your tracks. In the quiet glow, we remember. Each flame carries a memory. But even then, our job isn’t done.

On Sunday, when the event comes to a close, we don’t simply clear the bags away. Each one is collected with care, folded, and prepared for its final journey. Every year, the bags are respectfully burned, and their ashes are kept.

Even after the lights fade, the memories remain.

Those ashes are then placed at our Tree in Ferrybank during our tree planting ceremony in September,  a way to keep every dedication, every name, every memory together in one special place.

More Than a Moment, A Lasting Impact

So the next time you see the candle bags glowing around the track, I hope you’ll see more than just a candlebag in that moment. I hope you’ll see the time, the care, and the love that goes into each and every one,  from the first label in March, to their final resting place months later.

Because for us, it’s never just a bag. It’s someone’s story. 💜
