"Why I Relay" - Andrea Conroy

My name is Andrea Conroy, I have volunteered at the Relay for Life for the past 3 years and I will definitely be returning this year. I work in the Wexford Volunteer Centre which is where I first heard of the Relay for life and I immediately knew that this was a cause that I felt that I really wanted to get involved with. I wanted to feel a part of something that touches so many lives and join in the fight against cancer, raising awareness and fundraising for the services provided by the Irish cancer society and research into one day finding a cure.

Every year, through the volunteer centre I see such a great team of eager volunteers who do such essential work from the committee to the stewards and the car park attendants and not forgetting all the teams that relay for the two days to make sure that the whole event is a real celebration of the bravery of the survivors and a fitting tribute to those who are no longer with us.

Last year I volunteered in the survivors tent where I had the privilege to meet some very inspiring people and hear some of their stories about how they fought and won against cancer. I also got to volunteer in the car park where I witnessed the sheer volume of participants supporting the cause.

Sadly in the past three years I have lost both my grandmothers to cancer, so this year I will be remembering them as with all the other volunteers I participate in making this years Relay memorable and meaningful for all involved and just as in the past three years I am proud to be a part of the wonderful community of Relay for Life which brings together people from all walks of life in a powerful show of unity and resilience.
